Apples

10/4/2008
Hilton, NY

I’m someone who is always up for new things, so when the text messages came in about a thing called the Hilton Apple Festival, I decided to give it a shot. I wasn’t up for sitting around the house on a Saturday and it was going to be a decent afternoon for October in upstate NY (upper 50’s and no rain). When I first returned from Vegas and Phoenix, I was pleased with the non 100 degree temps. Fall is definitely here and I don’t mind the 60’s, but the grey is a bummer and the thought of approaching winter is not very exciting to me.

I threw on an under shirt, long sleeve white t, and an orange t to go with a blue hat and headed out for the Apple Fest. As the title describes, all things apple were on display. There were apple crisps, caramel apples, fried apples, apple crepes, apple pie, apple cider and a few other apple related items. I had a crepe, some cider and some popcorn. Some of my friends may have hit all of the above.

There were a lot of craft booths and luckily the girls we were with were more into the people watching and food than the knick knacks. I ran into a few people I knew and enjoyed the small town atmosphere. There were three stages for bands and one local staple called The Skycoasters did their thing on the main one. While we were there a karate group displayed their skills. People of different ages sparred with each other and broke boards. Two teenage girls got caught up by the 75 sets of eyes on them and continuously hit each other harder than I expected. My guess is they don’t always have a big audience so the adrenaline was pumping.

We milled about and eventually called it a Fest after two hours. The group of 8 then went back to Maddie’s house for a cookout.

There have to be a lot of these Fall fests going on around small town America. Hockey moms and their kids take advantage. And so did I. Americana was on display. There were some strange mullets and such, but that is what we are about. People living their life the way they want to live their life.
