Turkey

I’m getting up there. It is interesting to see the age evolution. It used to be the night before Thanksgiving was, “the biggest going out night of the year.” I would come back to Rochester from college or working down south and catch up with all of my friends who stayed local or were coming back to town like me. Everyone was always amped up for the evening.

Last night was an interesting dynamic. There was no chatter. There was no excitement for the evening. Now we try and stay away. It is “amateur night.” My friends who are married and have kids and most who are in serious relationships had no desire to hit the town. To be honest, neither did I.

But I don’t fall into any of those three categories, so I ventured out to people watch with my friend Rick and his 25 year old girlfriend and her ladyfriends. We hopped around and wound up at The Colony, a place my friends from high school co-own (the age evolution does not stop). I mixed it up with some of our other friends and enjoyed myself. It is always fun to be out and about, even though the older mind resists it.

And the body regrets it today. I don’t feel the effects of the bar scene. I feel the effects of the time. Going to bed at 3 AM hits me more than it used to.

But I am ready for today. The years have taught me a secret. Start Thanksgiving off with a protein shake. This speeds up my metabolism and allows me to go for the marathon of eating. I am more excited for today’s eating festivities than I was last night’s going out festivities. That may speak to my appetite or my age. Who knows. It’s Turkey Day! Enjoy.
